Matthew grew up on the family farm in Tinahely, Co. Wicklow, which is now run by his brothers Joe and Michael, where they have a well-known high production dairy herd.
Having being educated in the University of Minnesota and also in Reading University in England, Matthew embarked on a career as a consultant specialising in nutrition and dairy management. He soon became well know for his "no-nonsense" approach to farming and "keep it simple" philosophy.
In dairying he looks at the whole farm and appraises its strong points and builds up the most feasible system for that particular farm and in all cases making maximum use of grass and home grown feed. Feeding the cow is all about producing a gallon of milk cheaply and keeping the cow healthy. That feeding will be influenced by the genetic potential of the cow and by the facilities available on the farm.
When it comes to fattening cattle he looks at the type of cattle and the potential of live weight-gain and then feeds to get maximum intake of reasonably priced feed thus giving the highest margin per day per animal. This results in higher profit per head and quicker turnover.
The whole area of non-grass forages, is an area which he claims has not yet being developed in Ireland and has great potential. This will allow greater flexibility and less dependency on poor quality grass silage. When these crops are grown and preserved properly then with the proper nutritional advice, excellent results can be got from all types of stock.
Matthew has spent a number of years in the USA where he is a partner in an 800-cow diary farm in Florida. This and his consultancy work around Europe have given him a level of experience which is difficult to match.
He is also working as a nutritionist for Bolger's of Ferns, Co. Wexford, one of the countries best quality feed suppliers.
Having worked for Hi-Spec on a part time basis over the last nine years, he is now available to Hi-Spec customer's full time.
